APTOS - Sophomore water polo captain Grace Frias has been named the Featured Seahawk after guiding her team to a third-place finish in the Coast Conference Women’s Water Polo Tournament. Women’s water polo finished the regular season in second place in the Coast North Division with a 5-4 conference record and 11-8 overall.
A feet made all the more impressive considering injuries forced the Seahawks to compete with only half their team, including the loss of two of their top three scorers.
“Our season was amazing,” Frias said. “I think this season was different for a lot of reasons, we faced a lot of unique challenges but we came out as a sisterhood… We were in the low ranks of the conference last year, to being the third seed overall this year. I am proud of us.”
After the team struggled to a 1-14 record overall last season, Frias fueled the turn around by leading the team in total points with 81, goals scored with 59 and assists with 22. Frias also led the team in blocks with 12 and finished the year tied for the second most steals on the team with 20.
An avid open water swimmer, Frias has participated in the SemiNautica 6 mile swim and the Vikingholms Tahoe Relay. Currently, Frias is training for a solo Tahoe crossing this summer.
With grace and power, Frias scored from virtually every spot in the pool from the midline on alternating between power corner shots and outside snipes.
Frias plans to study communication at Cal State University Monterey Bay and hopes to walk on to the water polo team.
