It wasn't your typical National Letter of Intent signing party. In fact, Michaela Thornton's gathering is believed to be the first of its kind in Santa Cruz County: She had a virtual audience.
Friends, family, past teammates and former and future coaches logged into Zoom, a video communications app, on Thursday to witness Cabrillo College's 5-foot-9 sophomore guard commit to play next season at University of Saint Katherine, an NAIA program in San Marcos.
It was essentially a game-time decision for Thornton to use Zoom. It came after California announced its shelter in place order March 20 to help prevent the spread of the deadly coronavirus. And it was a huge success.
