Newly named All-American outside hitter Elie Cary had 13 kills and 10 digs, and the No. 3 seed Cabrillo College women's volleyball team swept No. 14 Butte 25-20, 25-23, 25-18 in the first round of the CCCAA NorCal playoffs on Tuesday night.

"I think we're all going to go away from the night excited, but knowing we have more work to do," Cary said.

Seahawks coach Kelsee Montagna said she has just one player with playoff experience, so she hopes to see the team play with more confidence next match.

Isabella Bush added eight kills for the Seahawks and Ashley Souza had seven kills and eight digs. Kendra Lis had four aces, three kills and nine digs. Hailey Naaccarato led the Seahawks' defense with 16 digs.

"It's always nice to start playoffs with a win, three-zero," Lis said. "I don't think tonight we played our best, but I think it still makes a statement coming out winning three-zero."

The Seahawks (22-5) host No. 6 Sierra (22-7) in the second round on Saturday at 7 p.m. The winner advances to the state tournament Dec. 6-8 at Southwestern College in Chula Vista.

Cabrillo Athletics' George Paul Scheppler contributed to this report.
