APTOS – As the Cabrillo College softball team embarks on its first official season since 2019, the theme surrounding the squad is "newness."

Two of the Lady Hawks' starters are at positions other than the ones they played in high school: Tea Villalta, who was primarily an outfielder at Watsonville, has moved behind the plate as Cabrillo's catcher. Karla Struthers, a second baseman and outfielder at San Lorenzo Valley, is now at third base.

Then there's Renee Parker, who didn't even play softball in high school: She competed in track and field at Soquel, where she was one of the fastest 100-meter runners in Central Coast Section history.

Cabrillo coach Kristy Rossinger expects all three to excel in their respective roles for a squad that has just four players returning from last year's team, which went 4-16 in what was essentially a slate of exhibition games. Like the rest of their teammates, those four are freshmen in terms of eligibility.
