APTOS – Before the COVID-19 pandemic wiped out their 2020-21 season, the Lady Hawks of Cabrillo College were a women's basketball team on the rise.

Having given his team another infusion of top local talent, coach John Wilson believes the Lady Hawks still can be.

Cabrillo won its first Coast Conference South Division title in nearly 30 years following the 2017-18 season. The Lady Hawks added another in 2018-19 and came up just shy of a third in 2019-20.

With no games to prepare for during the ensuing, unplanned year off, it was difficult for Wilson's players to get motivated.

"Our practices weren't always the most competitive," Wilson said. "I don't want to say we missed a year, but we kind of did."

Among the many quirks of the canceled 2020-21 season is that the Lady Hawks' current roster consists entirely of freshmen. That includes four players from Cabrillo's stellar 2020 recruiting class – Scotts Valley High grads Ella Giguiere and guard Lauren Ambiel and twin guards Emma and Madison Stefanini, both formerly of Aptos.
