HAYWARD — Cabrillo College baseball players never stopped believing in themselves and their teammates.

Not after their season began with a series of storms that left their home field looking like the set of "Waterworld," which contributed to the Seahawks stumbling to a 4-10 start.

And they didn't lose faith in themselves after they finished third in the Coast Conference South Division and prayed to the baseball gods for a berth into the CCCAA NorCal Regional Playoffs, which they earned. They were seeded No. 23 out of 24 teams.

They kept the faith down to the final at-bat of their season, which came in an 11-4 loss to host Chabot in the Super Regional Championship game on a breezy Saturday.

"The heart and grit we showed all season," said Scott Masik, of what he'll remember most about his squad. "We're the twenty-three seed coming into the playoffs. We're a team that maybe shouldn't have made the playoffs, based on our record. But our team was hurt most of the season. We had a lot of key injuries and our guys battled through. We just tried to win the games we were supposed to win and keeping fighting. And our guys were just the grittiest working team with the most heart, and in baseball that wins a lot."
