SALINAS — Lobos fans howled in support of Monterey Peninsula College's victorious football team Saturday. Conference rival Cabrillo exited the field quietly after stumbling to a 24-17 loss in the Living Breath Foundation Bowl at Rabobank Stadium.
The rematch of their epic regular-season finale — won by the Lobos 45-42 in the waning seconds on Izia Polanco's 28-yard field goal — didn't live up to their Nov. 16 shootout, not with nature showing its nasty side.
The wind showed up — boy, did it — but the tumbleweed didn't. An early morning rain and a constant 25 mph wind wreaked havoc on both teams' offensive game plans. Ultimately, it was a trick play that doomed the Seahawks — not that their five turnovers helped.
Midway through the fourth quarter with the score tied 17-all, Lobos receiver Dacian Sullivan gathered a handoff from quarterback Hunter Raquet and raced toward the right sideline on a sweep. Cabrillo's defense, including its secondary, bit, big time.
With the wind at his back, Sullivan unleashed one of the day's rare beautiful passes, hitting wide open receiver Quinton Lewis in stride for a 54-yard touchdown. It held up as the winning score in a game that was deadlocked twice, 10-all and 17-all.
