Coach James Page enters his inaugural season as Head Coach of the Men’s Basketball Program, excited to evolve the culture of Cabrillo College basketball.

"I’m incredibly honored to represent the college as a head coach, and grateful that President Wetsein, Assistant Superintendent Welch, and Dean Ramsey entrusted me with the future of this program. We want Cabrillo College Men’s Basketball to continue to be a program in which student-athletes develop holistically, growing as great players and students, but first and foremost as great people. Our ultimate goal is prepping student-athletes for the transition to the four-year University-level, all while engaging and inspiring our local community through the game of basketball."

Coach Page takes over after serving as an assistant coach under Tony Marcopulos for the past eight seasons. In that time the Seahawks won almost 150 games, six Coast Conference South titles, produced seven consecutive Conference MVP’s, and made six trips to the State Tournament (California Community College Athletic Association [CCCAA] equivalent of the Elite Eight). Since joining the program in 2012, Coach Page has been instrumental in the recruitment and development of over 50 players, with more than 40 percent earning the opportunity to play on at four-year colleges.

Coach Page concurrently serves as Cabrillo’s Wellness Education Center Director, the premier on-campus fitness education center. Beginning this tenure-track role in 2017, he has grown enrollment each year, developed new classes during winter and summer session, and won grant awards two consecutive years.

Prior to coming to Cabrillo, Coach Page was the lead assistant for eight seasons at the University of California Santa Cruz (UCSC). At UCSC, he helped recruit and develop more than 25 All-Conference Players, three New-Comers of the Year and the #2 scorer in school history. During his tenure at UCSC, Coach Page helped turn around a once-struggling program, exceeding the previous season’s win total in five consecutive seasons.

A well-respected coach, Page has coached with Nike Skills Camps and Basketball Jones Hoop Camps throughout California, in addition to serving as a Head Coach for an Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) program in Northern California. In 2015, he created and developed the Cabrillo College Summer Basketball Camp Program, enrolling hundreds of kids, growing the program each year while promoting Cabrillo’s Athletic Department and its positive influence within Santa Cruz County.

Recently Coach Page has been a key force in spearheading efforts to bridge social distance obstacles through digital learning and coaching. “One of the best parts of my job is giving back to the community, and more importantly the kids within the community, by sharing my love for the game. Right now we are faced with new opportunities on how to accomplish that.”

Coach Page credits a long list of coaches that mentored him throughout his career, the most important being his childhood coach and father Jim Page.

“To this day, no one in the world knows more about basketball than my dad. He lives and breathes the game, and taught me to as well.”

Growing up in Southern California, Page graduated from Ramona High School, playing under Hall of Fame Coach Al Schaffer. He then played for Hall of Fame Coach Gary Smith at the University of Redlands. While on the roster at UCSC, Page was instructed by former NBA player Bernard Thompson and eventually Coach Gordon Johnson.

Page holds a Master of Science degree in Sports and Recreational Sciences from Ohio University and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology from the University of California Santa Cruz. He lives in Aptos with his wife and family and has been a proud resident of Santa Cruz County for over 20 years.
