Women's soccer v. Shasta College preview

Women's soccer v. Shasta College preview

APTOS - Strength against strength will be the theme of tonight's women's soccer match against the Shasta College Knights (2-2) at 7 p.m. in Carl Conelly Stadium. The game will be streamed live at Facebook.com/CabrilloSeahawks

The Seahawks stout defense, anchored by sophomore goalie Sophia Magliato, has yielded just five goals over 270 minutes of preseason play.

That's the fewest goals allowed in the Coast Conference South.

That defensive strength will be pitted against an explosive Knights offense that ran down the De Anza College Dons yesterday, 5-1, in Cupertino.

As of the time of publication, De Anza has scored nine goals and allowed eight. 62 percent of their overall goals allowed came at the hands of the Shasta College Knights yesterday.

That potent offense shields what has proven to be a susceptible defense. The Knights got shut out and outscored by American River, 10-0, in their season opener. In American River's (2-1) two games since that matchup, they have scored only three goals.

With multiple key players nursing injuries, Coach Mondragon will look to her young but capable bench to find ways of stymiing the Knights attack.

.

A closer look at the women's soccer team's (1-2) schedule reveals that they could just as easily be sitting at 2-1, as 1-2.

After withering in scorching conditions during the closing minutes of their season opener at Reedley College on September 3rd, the Seahawks earned a gutsy 1-0 win at home against Feather River (0-3-2).

In their game against Reedley in which the Seahawks lost by a final score of 3-1, all three Tiger goals came in the final minute of the half or during stoppage time. After the game, the Seahawks coaching staff and players seemed unanimous in their feeling that the heat of the central valley played a significant role in their downfall.

Had they held on to their early one goal advantage against Reedley (2-2), the Seahawks would be tied for overall record in the Coast Conference South with De Anza College (2-1).
